Alice Weidel Emerges as Potential Chancellor Candidate for Germany’s Far-Right AfD Party
The co-leaders of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel, have reached an agreement that Weidel will be the party’s candidate for chancellor. This decision, however, is still subject to approval by party members during the AfD’s conference set for March next year.
Weidel, currently serving as co-leader of the AfD, has been favored for the nomination for the 2025 federal election, with the next federal election in Germany scheduled for September next year.

At 45 years old, Weidel has been a prominent member of the AfD since 2013 and a member of the Bundestag since 2017. The AfD, initially a eurosceptic party, has evolved into a significant political force in Germany, focusing on issues such as immigration.
Despite recent electoral successes, mainstream parties in Germany have refused to form coalitions with the AfD, limiting its chances of being part of a future government. While Weidel’s candidacy signals a shift in the AfD’s leadership, the path to the chancellorship remains challenging.
