471 public servants suspended; SANDF employee paid for 5 years without working

Government employees on paid suspension have recently come under scrutiny, with 471 individuals, including a SANDF employee, being suspended for various reasons. Among them, the SANDF employee has been on suspension for five years while still earning a salary without delivering services.

According to public service and administration minister Mzamo Buthelezi, this information was revealed in response to a parliamentary question raised by EFF MP Sixolise Gcilishe. In the 2023/24 financial year, a total of 288 public servants from national departments and 183 from provincial departments were on paid suspension, with 54 employees suspended for more than a year.

The complex suspensions extended to the National Prosecuting Authority as well, with cases involving corruption, fraud, and financial investigations causing delays in the disciplinary process. Additionally, cases in the education sector, particularly those related to teachers committing sexual transgressions against learners, faced backlog issues.

Overall, these suspensions highlight the challenges and complexities faced by the government in finalizing cases within the prescribed period, leading to prolonged paid suspensions for numerous employees.
