A group of over 100 Democrats in Congress is urging the Biden administration to investigate the killing of American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi by Israeli forces in the West Bank. They believe failing to investigate gives Israeli forces an unacceptable license to act with impunity.
In a letter sent to the White House, State Department, and Justice Department, the lawmakers are calling for an independent investigation to determine if Eygi’s killing could be classified as a homicide. They demand a report on the evidence found, methodology used, and a response from the administration on their knowledge of Eygi’s death and plans for an investigation.
Eygi was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier during a protest against illegal settlements in the West Bank. Despite Israeli military officials claiming her death was indirect and unintentional, evidence such as witness testimony and videos refute these claims. President Biden’s acceptance of Israel’s narrative has led to calls for accountability and further investigation to prevent impunity.
The lawmakers, including vocal supporters of Palestinian rights, emphasize the need for the U.S. to independently investigate and hold Israeli forces accountable for Eygi’s death. Failure to do so undermines American values and responsibilities.
