The South Sudanese Women Peacemakers organization expressed deep concerns over the recent decision to extend the transitional period in South Sudan by another two years. While acknowledging the potential benefits of the extension, the organization highlighted the lack of significant progress in implementing key provisions of the peace agreement in the past six years.
The women called for a carefully guided transition, led by an interim government, that prioritizes the involvement of civil society, women’s groups, youth, people with disabilities, and faith-based organizations in discussions about preparing the country for a successful democratic transition. They emphasized the importance of constitutional reform, ending sexual and gender-based violence, corruption, and implementing security sector reforms.
The organization urged the international community to support this proposed guided transition to ensure real progress and a better future for all South Sudanese by 2026. The South Sudan Women Peacemakers group, representing diverse sectors of society, is dedicated to advocating for peace, inclusivity, and the empowerment of marginalized voices in shaping the country’s future.
