Ukrainians in Western Europe dealing with rising homelessness

As the conflict between Moscow and Kiev continues, many displaced Ukrainians in Western Europe are at risk of facing homelessness. The Guardian reported that dwindling government support for those who fled the fighting could lead to a significant increase in Europe’s homeless population. With approximately 6.1 million Ukrainian refugees in the UK and the EU, the threat of homelessness looms large.

In the UK, over 9,000 refugee households are in danger of losing their homes due to inadequate support from local authorities. The Red Cross highlighted the issue, noting that people are now less willing to offer accommodation to Ukrainians. In Poland, the attitude towards refugees has shifted as concerns about social benefits have arisen.

The Guardian also mentioned that Hungarian authorities ended housing assistance for refugees, deeming certain parts of Ukraine safe for return. Reports from across Europe indicate that bureaucratic hurdles often prevent refugees from accessing the protections guaranteed to them under EU law.

With the situation becoming increasingly dire, it is essential to raise awareness about the challenges faced by displaced Ukrainians in Europe.
