Istanbul – Jaber Omar — The latest developments in the ongoing saga over Turkey’s Russian S-400 missile systems have caught the attention of media outlets in both Turkey and Greece. Reports indicate that the United States proposed a deal where Turkey would hand over the S-400s or place them under US supervision at Incirlik Air Base in exchange for rejoining the F-35 fighter jet program and lifting sanctions. However, Ankara has reportedly rejected the offer.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan have been in talks with US officials to find a solution to the issue. Concerns have risen in Greece over the potential regional implications if Turkey were to rejoin the F-35 program.
This latest development comes after Turkey was expelled from the F-35 program in 2019 for purchasing the S-400 systems. Turkey has since demanded the removal of sanctions imposed under the CAATSA act and insisted that the S-400s remain under their control.
