Russia eyes Ukraine’s nuclear plants

President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a dire warning during his United Nations speech, stating that Russia is planning to attack Ukraine’s nuclear power stations in the near future, potentially causing radioactive fallout worse than the Chornobyl disaster. Zelensky emphasized that Russian strikes have already devastated Ukraine’s conventional power production sites and targeting nuclear plants would be a way to intimidate the civilian population.

Prior to Russia’s invasion, nuclear power accounted for 55% of Ukraine’s electricity production, with three operational plants. Zelensky revealed that intelligence agencies have strong evidence of Russia planning attacks on these nuclear sites that could result in a nuclear disaster.
