Far-Right FPO Leads Polls Ahead of Austrian Elections

The latest poll conducted by the Institute for Demoscopy and Data Analysis on Sept. 23 has revealed that the far-right, xenophobic Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) is leading ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections with 27%. The ruling Austrian People’s Party (OVP) follows closely behind with 25%, while the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) is in third place with 21%. The Greens and the NEOS Party trail in fourth place with 9%.

The key issues in the upcoming elections include social security, asylum/migration, and climate/environmental protection. The FPO, known for its tough asylum and migration policies, is emphasizing these issues in their campaign.

The OVP, led by Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer, focuses on “performance, family, and security” in their election manifesto. They are also advocating for a stricter migration policy.

The SPO prioritizes social justice, proposing measures like a 32-hour work week and wage increases. The NEOS Party aims to strengthen the economy and reduce bureaucracy, while the Greens advocate for tolerance, individual freedom, and respect for different lifestyles.
