New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on charges of accepting bribes and soliciting illegal foreign donations for his election campaign, making him the first sitting mayor in modern history to face criminal charges. The 57-page indictment details his alleged ties to Turkish government officials and includes accusations of wire fraud and receiving luxury gifts.
Eric Adams, a member of the Democratic Party, served as an officer in the New York City Police Department before becoming the city’s 110th mayor in 2022. Known for his tough stance on crime and homelessness, Adams now faces a political crisis that threatens his leadership and reputation.
Adams is facing charges related to bribery, soliciting illegal donations, wire fraud, and accepting luxury travel benefits. The indictment alleges that he received over $100,000 worth of benefits from foreign businesspeople and officials, including airline upgrades and hotel rooms.
Amid calls for his resignation, Adams has denied the charges and vowed to fight them. If convicted, he could be forced to resign, triggering a special election. Governor Kathy Hochul has the authority to remove him from office, potentially leading to a political shake-up in the city.
