Israel’s Gaza War Influence on Jordan’s Elections

Jordanians showed robust support for Palestinian resistance and denounced Israel’s aggression against Gaza during a march in Amman on 20 September 2024. The recent victory of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan’s parliamentary elections on 10 September highlighted the strong solidarity Jordanians have for Palestine and their backing of the resistance movement, while also serving as a critique of the state’s alignment with US policies.

The Islamic Action Front (IAF), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, significantly increased their representation in parliament, indicating widespread support beyond their traditional base. This surge in support was largely driven by the Brotherhood’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.

The election results underscored the Jordanian people’s frustration with the government’s lack of vision regarding Israel’s threats and continued violence against Palestinians. The suppression of opposition parties, including left-wing groups, by the authorities further fueled discontent among the public.

Moving forward, the outcome of the elections serves as a cautionary tale for Jordan’s political future, emphasizing the need for genuine political pluralism and protection of civil liberties. It is imperative for the state to address the concerns of its citizens and prioritize the Palestinian cause in the face of escalating Israeli aggression.
