The government has announced a new initiative to combat marine pollution caused by discarded fishing gear, known as “ghost gear.” Prime Minister Han Duck-soo revealed the plan, which includes measures such as requiring fishing vessels to record and store information about their fishing gear and introducing a reporting system for lost equipment.
This comprehensive strategy aims to protect marine ecosystems, promote sustainable fisheries, and prevent the devastating impact of ghost gear, which accounts for 76% of marine litter, causing ecological damage and economic losses amounting to billions of dollars each year.
Additionally, the government plans to engage with international organizations, local communities, and private enterprises to further enhance these efforts and seek innovative solutions. By encouraging voluntary participation from the fishing industry and improving infrastructure for gear recovery, the goal is to significantly increase the rate of gear collection and reduce its harmful effects on the environment and economy.
Through these proactive measures, South Korea is taking a significant step towards addressing a pressing environmental issue and setting a precedent for sustainable marine resource management.
