Increase in Burglary Offences, Decrease in Homicide Figures

New data released by the Central Statistics Office reveals a concerning rise in burglary, robbery, and theft offences. The figures also show a significant increase in fraud offences, while homicide and sex offences have seen a decrease.

Operation Tairge was established by Gardaí to combat organised retail crime, but despite arrests and court appearances, the problem continues to escalate.

Notably, theft offences have surged by 8%, with shoplifting and retail theft accounting for over 5,300 of the reported crimes. Robbery and burglary have also seen increases of 8% and 9%, respectively.

Furthermore, fraud and deception offences have risen by 21% over the past year, marking the largest increase in any crime category. On the other hand, there have been decreases in homicides (15%), offences against government, justice procedures, and organization of crime (13%), and sexual offences (12%).

While organised crime offences are down, with no gang-related murders reported this year and a 28% reduction in drug offences over the past five years, the overall trend is still concerning.

Despite a slight decrease in the number of crime victims, the data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling rising criminal activity.
