In a recent development in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, the district administration demolished 23 illegal structures in a village in Kaiserganj, despite protests from residents. Similar actions were taken in Kannauj and Fatehpur districts as well.
The demolished structures in Kaiserganj, many of which belonged to the minority community, were built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The demolition was carried out following a court order, with most residents voluntarily vacating their properties.
In Kannauj, unauthorized construction at Umarda Primary School was razed, and in Fatehpur district, encroachments along a road stretch were also removed. The authorities identified structures for removal based on previous measurements, with some residents voluntarily complying and others given a month to clear their encroachments.
Despite minor disputes, the removal process was successful, with plans for drainage improvements and road widening in place. The Supreme Court’s September 2 order emphasized the importance of not protecting unauthorized constructions or encroachments on public spaces, setting a precedent for such actions in the future.
