French Polynesia reported that a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile launched into the Pacific landed near its exclusive economic zone, causing protests from neighboring countries like Japan and Taiwan. China had announced the rare trial and stated that the missile carried a dummy warhead.
Australia and New Zealand also expressed concerns about the launch, with Australia seeking an explanation and New Zealand calling it an unwelcome development. The Pentagon confirmed that the United States received advanced notification of the test, which they viewed as a positive step to prevent misunderstandings.
China’s military released imagery of the missile, believed to be a Dongfeng-31 AG intercontinental ballistic missile. Analysts noted China’s increased nuclear development and defense spending in recent years, with the Pentagon warning of a rapid growth in China’s nuclear arsenal.
China defended the launch as part of their annual training plan and not directed against any specific country. However, analysts believe China’s message was to demonstrate its military strength in response to escalating tensions with the U.S. and its allies.
