The Federal Executive Council is considering amendments to the National Identity Management Commission Act to allow foreigners in Nigeria to obtain National Identification Numbers and be taxed. The proposed Economy Stabilisation Bill aims to tax expatriates and income-earning immigrants residing in the country.
The amendment seeks to broaden the scope of registrable persons to include foreigners with taxable presence or income in Nigeria. This move will require the mandatory use of the National Identification Number for tax-related transactions.
Additionally, a third bill aims to amend the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Act to facilitate the payment of fees and charges in Naira, enhancing the ease of doing business in Nigeria by reducing dependence on the dollar. These legislative changes demonstrate the government’s commitment to strengthening tax administration and promoting the national currency.
If passed, these amendments will ensure that all individuals, including foreigners, living and working in Nigeria, are registered and taxed, providing a tax identity for each individual under the Nigerian tax structure.
