New South Wales women now have easier access to the contraceptive pill with a trial by the state government made permanent. Initially available for women aged 18-35, the trial allowed them to extend their supply for up to 12 months without a new prescription. The eligibility criteria have since expanded to include women aged 40-49, who can now get an additional three months supply over the counter. Premier Chris Minns highlighted the convenience of this initiative, especially in times where visiting a doctor can be challenging.
The program has seen success with over 500 pharmacies providing consultations to women in NSW. This move follows other trials that empower pharmacists to provide care for urinary tract infections and minor skin conditions. While there is tension between pharmacists and doctors about regular screenings, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia NSW President expressed confidence in the program’s positive impact on women’s reproductive health.
