Chinese automaker GAC Motor has teamed up with Mexican charging provider VEMO to enhance Mexico’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, addressing the need for more charging stations in the growing EV market. GAC Motor is set to introduce five new electric cars and two plug-in hybrids in Mexico, making charging more accessible through VEMO’s network of over 550 public stations in 14 states.
The timing is perfect as Mexico’s electric car production surged by 37.38% in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year. With predictions of producing over 223,640 electric vehicles by the end of the year and sales forecasted to exceed 10,000 units, the country is witnessing a significant shift towards EV adoption.
However, Mexico’s current ratio of 41 vehicles per charger underscores the urgent need for more stations, requiring an annual investment of $1.73 billion for the next six years to reach a total of $10.41 billion by 2030. Alongside GAC Motor, other Chinese brands like Great Wall Motors, SAIC Motors, Chirey, and BYD are also entering Mexico’s market, accelerating the country’s transition to electric mobility.
The Mexican government’s support, through initiatives like introducing a legal framework for the electromobility market and setting a target of 18,000 EV charging stations by 2037, further reinforces the country’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future on wheels.
