US President Joe Biden announced a significant increase in military aid to Ukraine, totaling nearly $8 billion, ahead of a crucial meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington. Zelensky is set to present his “victory plan” to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, with Biden pledging support to help Ukraine fight against Russia.
In his statement, Biden declared a surge in security assistance for Ukraine, including $5.5 billion in military aid authorized before the end of the US fiscal year, and an additional $2.4 billion via the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. The aid includes the provision of Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munitions to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities.
While Zelensky has urged the US to allow Ukraine to launch US-made long-range missiles into Russia, Biden has not yet granted this permission. Russia has strongly opposed such actions, with President Putin warning of potential nuclear responses.
As Ukraine’s main military backer, the US’s support has been crucial in its defense against Russian aggression. Biden also announced plans to convene a high-level meeting of Ukraine allies in Germany in October to coordinate efforts in supporting Ukraine.
