In a powerful statement at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Bangladesh has declared that it has reached its limits in hosting the Rohingya community, referred to as the world’s most persecuted group.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has called for an urgent “all stakeholders’ conference” to address the deepening crisis and explore new solutions. He highlighted the deteriorating security situation in the border region and urged international bodies like the UN Security Council and ASEAN to take decisive action.
Yunus emphasized the importance of repatriation for both the Rohingya and Myanmar, warning of potential spillover effects on neighboring countries if the root causes are left unaddressed. He stressed the need for justice and accountability for crimes against the Rohingya, as over 1.2 million refugees have sought shelter in Bangladesh since 2017.
With the recent influx of new refugees, the urgency of the situation has only intensified. The international community must work together to prioritize repatriation and find sustainable solutions for this ongoing crisis.
