Quito Declares State of Emergency Due to Wildfires

Ecuador’s capital, Quito, is facing a state of emergency as seven wildfires have caused injuries, evacuations, and destruction. The fires have affected over 2,000 hectares of forests, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 families. Quito’s Mayor Pabel Munoz stated that 2,000 firefighters, military personnel, and rescuers are working tirelessly to contain the fires.

President Daniel Noboa cut short his official agenda to return to the capital and lead the efforts against the wildfires. The authorities have confirmed that human ignition is to blame for the blazes, and those responsible will be prosecuted for terrorism.

Due to the poor air quality caused by the fires, classes were suspended, and government entities worked remotely. The widespread drought in Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia has exacerbated the situation, leading to the hottest temperatures in decades.

This environmental crisis calls for urgent action at all levels of government to combat the devastating effects of the wildfires.
