The National Assembly adopted a resolution urging Japan to halt the release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and calling on the Korean government to respond accordingly. The resolution, proposed by the Democratic Party, passed with 145 in favor, 53 against, and 2 abstentions among the 200 present members.

The resolution calls on the Korean government to enhance marine radiation inspections, provide radiation monitoring equipment for seafood markets, and establish institutional protections for the fishing industry. It also urges Japan to cease the water release and objectively evaluate its impact on marine ecosystems and human health.

Additionally, the resolution calls for Japan to comply with the London Convention and Protocol next month to address the issue internationally. It also seeks collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency for responsible ocean research.

This resolution highlights the ongoing concerns regarding the environmental and health implications of Japan’s actions and underscores the importance of global cooperation in addressing nuclear issues.
