Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio (PS) has opted out of joining an alliance for a gender-responsive and inclusive recovery in Ukraine, sparking controversy within Finnish politics.
Despite criticism from President Alexander Stubb and various political parties, Tavio defended his decision by emphasizing support for other vulnerable groups in Ukraine. The alliance, established in June at the Ukraine Recovery Conference, aims to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in rebuilding the country.
Criticism from both sides of the aisle
Opposition parties like the Social Democratic Party and the Green League have expressed disappointment in Tavio’s decision, questioning its compatibility with Finland’s foreign policy objectives. Even Prime Minister Petteri Orpo refrained from fully endorsing Tavio’s choice.
Amidst this controversy, Tavio’s conservative values and stance on LGBTQ+ issues have come under scrutiny. While he has a history of supporting gender equality, his recent actions have raised concerns about Finland’s commitment to international values and alliances.
