Sri Lanka’s Newly Elected President Dissolves Parliament and Sets General Election Date
Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved the Parliament on Tuesday and announced the date for a general election. The parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held on November 14, with the next parliament convening on November 21.
The decision to dissolve the Parliament and call for a general election was expected, as Dissanayake had promised during his election campaign to form a new government. Following his swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned, paving the way for Dissanayake to appoint a new prime minister and cabinet.
Dissanayake’s coalition group, the National People’s Party, holds only three seats in the 225-member parliament. A fresh mandate through the upcoming election could strengthen his position as he continues to enjoy public support post-win.
Sri Lanka’s First Woman Prime Minister in 24 Years
Hours after Dissanayake’s swearing-in, Harini Amarasuriya, a female lawmaker, was appointed as the new interim prime minister of Sri Lanka. She becomes the first woman to lead the government in 24 years, bringing a fresh perspective to the country’s political landscape.
