Security shelter for govt dept costs €1.4m, cttee informed

A recent revelation has shown that the security shelter next to the Department of Finance came with a hefty price tag of over €1.4 million. The Chairman of the OPW, John Conlon, disclosed this information at the Oireachtas Finance Committee, where he explained the extensive consultations and security considerations that went into installing the shelter.

In addition to the significant costs for mechanical, electrical, and security components, there were underground, ventilation, and CCTV expenses that contributed to the total cost of €1.429m.

Despite initial suggestions for a more cost-effective uncovered bike parking option at Leinster House, security advice led to the installation of a covered bike shelter costing €336,000. This decision was met with scrutiny regarding the disproportionate expenditure for the project.

Mr. Conlon assured that steps are being taken to ensure value for money in future projects, with revised approval thresholds and external audits in place. Additionally, the OPW is taking a proactive stance in managing flood risk, with a commitment of €1.3 billion to protect homes and businesses.
