Russia in talks to send advanced missiles to Houthi rebels

Russia is in talks to provide Yemen’s Houthi rebels with advanced Yakhont anti-ship missiles through the mediation of Iran, according to Reuters. The deal, which began before May, involves discussions between Houthi envoys and Russian officials in Tehran.

The supersonic missiles, capable of flying up to 300 kilometers at double the speed of sound, could significantly impact maritime security in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. A senior U.S. official expressed deep concern over the negotiations.

This move highlights the strengthening ties between Russia and Iran, now extending to support for militant groups. Analysts suggest the missiles could threaten U.S. and allied ships safeguarding commercial vessels in the region, particularly alarming Saudi Arabia.

While the U.S. suspects Russian motives may relate to Ukraine, they remain confident in their ability to intercept the shipments. The potential transfer of these advanced weapons raises serious regional security concerns and underscores the complex geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
