The National Salvation Front (NAS) rebels have denied any involvement in the recent ambush on a bus along the Juba-Nimule highway, dismissing accusations made by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF). The attack on a Bebeto Coach bus heading to Uganda resulted in the death of one Ugandan national and left eight others injured.
In a press statement, NAS spokesperson Suba Samuel Manase condemned the SSPDF’s claims, labeling them as “cheap and baseless lies.” Manase criticized the government for its failure to provide adequate security on the Juba-Nimule road and across South Sudan, attributing it to the soldiers not being paid for nearly 21 months.
He further accused the government of attempting to divert attention from its legitimacy crisis by falsely implicating NAS in the attack. Manase claimed that the government was portraying NAS as a regional threat to gain external sympathy.
The ambush on the Juba-Nimule highway, a vital supply route connecting South Sudan to Uganda and Kenya, is the first armed attack reported on the highway this year. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced in the region.
