Putin: Russia reserves right to use nuclear weapons in case of attack on Belarus
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Wednesday that Russia has the right to use nuclear weapons if an attack occurs on neighboring Belarus, a key ally in the conflict with Ukraine. During a Russian Security Council meeting in Moscow, Putin emphasized that this decision has been agreed upon with Belarus.
Putin highlighted Belarus as a member of the Union State, which Russia and Belarus established in 1999. He mentioned that after thorough discussions within Russian authorities over the past year, changes have been proposed to Russia’s nuclear doctrine. These changes specify that any aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear state, supported by a nuclear power, will be considered an attack on Moscow.
In the event of a significant air and space attack on Russia, Putin stated that the country may consider the use of nuclear weapons. This declaration comes amidst reports that Ukraine is urging the US for permission to launch attacks deeper into Russian territory.
Putin’s recent statements reflect Moscow’s ongoing efforts to update its nuclear doctrine and assert its defense capabilities in the face of potential threats.
