High street pharmacies are shutting down at an alarming rate, causing concern for the shift towards using them instead of GPs for patient care. Last year, 436 community pharmacies in England closed permanently, with an additional 13,863 temporary closures, impacting access to health advice and medication. Rural areas, communities with older populations, and deprived areas are most affected by this trend, leaving some parts of England as “pharmacy deserts.”
Staff shortages, particularly the challenge in finding locum pharmacists, are cited as the main reason for closures, hindering the government’s Pharmacy First initiative to alleviate pressure on GPs. The National Pharmacy Association warns that the rising closures may lead to increased strain on the healthcare system.
Healthwatch’s findings reveal the areas most impacted by closures, with the Department of Health and Social Care acknowledging the sector’s long-standing neglect and pledging to review funding.
