Construction firm BAM has faced delays in completing the new National Children’s Hospital project, with the substantial completion date being shifted 14 times in four years. The CEO of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, David Gunning, expressed concerns about the project timeline being extended by eight months, now aiming for completion by June next year.
Gunning highlighted the lack of a realistic and resource-located program from BAM, leading to ongoing deferrals. Despite €1.478 billion already spent on the project, risks identified in a 2019 PwC review, such as contractor entitlements and construction inflation, could increase costs further.
BAM’s failure to provide a compliant program and incomplete rooms have raised concerns about the project’s management. Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane called for accountability and urged the board, contractors, and government to address the ongoing issues. He emphasized the need for effective leadership and regular communication to resolve the situation and ensure the hospital’s timely completion for the children of Ireland.
