During their meeting at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed a commitment to maintaining a positive climate in Greek-Turkish relations. They instructed their foreign ministers to plan the next High-Level Cooperation Council in Ankara in January 2025 based on the Athens Declaration.
The leaders acknowledged the success of Confidence-Building Measures in de-escalating tensions and agreed to address the exclusive economic zone and migration issues. Mitsotakis also raised the Cyprus matter, advocating for UN-led talks. The Turkish president did not openly react to this. Both sides remain hopeful for future dialogue.
Furthermore, discussions on migration cooperation and dismantling traffickers’ networks were on the agenda. The foreign ministers will determine the timeline for opening talks on the continental shelf. Post-meeting, Erdogan met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while Mitsotakis planned to update Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on the talks.
