A recent incident at one of Donald Trump’s Florida golf courses has led to a man being charged with attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, facing life imprisonment if convicted. The suspect, Ryan Routh, had a history of criminal activity and was found with a gun near Trump. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Miami and filed in Federal District Court in southern Florida.
Earlier, a federal magistrate judge ordered Routh to be held until trial due to his extensive criminal history and being a flight risk. Additionally, Routh’s son was charged with possessing child sexual abuse material. Ryan Routh was accused of planning to shoot Trump from a short distance using a semiautomatic rifle.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed you,” Routh wrote in a note found at a friend’s house. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that violence against public officials will not be tolerated. The Justice Department is committed to holding those who perpetrate such acts accountable.
