Elon Musk’s SpaceX under scrutiny for safety violations, FAA proposes fine of $633,000
In a recent hearing, FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker emphasized the importance of safety for SpaceX, calling for the company to operate at the “highest level of safety.” SpaceX faces a proposed $633,000 fine for violating FAA rules ahead of two launches in 2023.
Whitaker mentioned SpaceX’s failure to obtain a permit for launches in June and July of last year and highlighted the need for safety management and whistleblower programs. The FAA cited violations including a lack of approval for a communications plan revision related to a planned rocket launch.
Additionally, SpaceX’s delay of the forthcoming Starship 5 launch was attributed to a failure to complete a required sonic boom analysis. While Musk criticized FAA’s actions, Whitaker stressed the importance of regulatory compliance for safety.
SpaceX has previously faced penalties for safety data submission issues. As SpaceX navigates regulatory challenges, Whitaker emphasized the need for equal oversight across all space companies. SpaceX has yet to comment on the latest developments.
