Crafting tradition under bamboo baskets

Crafting tradition under bamboo baskets

In a quaint street in Karnataka, the traditional art of bamboo craftsmanship is fading away as artisans struggle to make a living in a changing world. Savitri Kundgol, a skilled bamboo artisan, dreams of a better future for her children beyond the labor-intensive craft. Many families in the area have abandoned the trade due to a lack of demand, competition from plastic products, and limited marketing knowledge.

Despite their expertise, artisans face challenges such as rising input costs and outdated marketing strategies. The government provides some support, but it may not be enough to revive this dying art form. With dwindling interest from the younger generation, the once vibrant streets of bamboo artisans are slowly losing their craftsmen.

However, hope remains as advocates like Punati Shridhar call for more research on bamboo cultivation to support local artisans. If given the right resources and opportunities, the art of bamboo craftsmanship in Karnataka could see a revival, preserving a piece of tradition in a rapidly changing world.
