Arauco, the Chilean pulp and wood panel manufacturer, is making waves with its groundbreaking project in Brazil. The company is set to construct its first bleached pulp mill in the country, expanding its presence significantly in the Brazilian market.
The ambitious “Sucuriú Project” was approved by Arauco’s board of directors on September 24, 2024. With a whopping investment of $4.6 billion, this project is the largest in the company’s history. The new facility, located in Mato Grosso do Sul, aims to produce 3.5 million tons of bleached pulp annually, surpassing the capacity of competitors like Suzano.
The strategic location of the plant along the Sucuriú River and the favorable industrial and forestry policies of Mato Grosso do Sul make it an ideal choice for Arauco. The project is expected to begin operations by the end of 2027 and will also contribute over 400 megawatts of electricity to Brazil’s energy grid.
