Japan Lifts Tsunami Advisory After Strong Earthquake
Japan lifted a tsunami advisory for remote islands following a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported no major tremors and no serious damage after the quake struck near Torishima in the Pacific Ocean.
Four Tectonic Plates in Japan
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government oversees the Izu and Ogasawara Islands, which have around 24,000 residents. Japan sits on four major tectonic plates and experiences about 1,500 earthquakes a year. Despite this, advanced building techniques and emergency procedures help contain the effects of these quakes.
