Despite being one of the most dangerous routes in the world, migrants continue to cross the Darién Gap, the jungle border between Colombia and Panama. Over half a million individuals escaped desperate situations in Latin America last year, with the majority aiming to reach the US.
Human Rights Watch Director Tirana Hassan described the Darién as a place of impossible choices after observing the crisis in Colombian towns of Turbo and Necoclí. The region highlights the failure of migration policies in Latin America, pushing migrants into perilous journeys through the jungle.
The Venezuelan crisis plays a significant role in this migration wave, leading families to take extreme risks. The lack of humanitarian relief efforts, sexual violence, and the plight of vulnerable migrants necessitate international attention and support.
Latin American countries must adopt more compassionate and coordinated policies to address migration challenges and uphold the rights of displaced populations, particularly Venezuelans and Haitians.
