No court ruling halting Rivers LG elections — Electoral body

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission is forging ahead with plans to hold local government elections on October 5, 2024, despite claims of litigation hindering the process. Chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.) confirmed this during a training session for RSIEC staff, debunking assertions made by the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha.

Okocha’s remarks were believed to reference the faction of the APC led by Chief Emeka Beke, aligned with Rotimi Amaechi. Enebeli clarified that the elections would proceed as planned, with 18 out of 19 political parties participating.

Highlighting a recent Supreme Court ruling endorsing democratically elected local government councils, Enebeli emphasized that no court ruling prohibits the elections. He stressed the importance of complying with electoral laws and the obligation for INEC to provide the voters’ register to RSIEC.

With over 300 candidates in the running, Enebeli assured that the elections would proceed smoothly, reinforcing the legitimacy of the October 5 election date.
