The fight against plastic pollution in the Nile Basin region has gained momentum as journalists from ten countries gather in Kampala, Uganda, for a five-day workshop organized by the Nile Basin Discourse. The regional manager, Eng. Sylvester Anthony Matemu, highlighted the critical role of the media in raising awareness and driving action on this pressing environmental issue.
Over 30 journalists from the Nile Basin countries explored the impacts of plastic waste on the Nile River and surrounding communities, discussing best practices for reporting on environmental issues. They were equipped with tools to investigate and highlight the effects of plastic pollution on health, biodiversity, and local economies.
With plastic pollution posing significant threats to the livelihoods of millions in the basin, the urgency of the situation was underscored. The workshop included expert presentations, group discussions, and field visits to local sites affected by plastic waste.
As the workshop concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to champion the cause of environmental sustainability. The training aimed to empower journalists to effectively investigate and report on plastic pollution, inspiring change and encouraging sustainable practices within communities.
