Inaugural meeting of new Knesset committee on Israel’s eastern border – Israel News

A new Special Knesset Committee for Towns on the Eastern Border convened its first meeting to discuss the government’s plan to promote demographic growth in the Golan Heights. Chaired by MK Ze’ev Elkin, the committee aims to oversee state actions in key areas like Eilat, the Arava, the Dead Sea, and the Golan Heights.

Despite speculation of political motives behind Elkin’s appointment, party sources defended his chairmanship as United Right’s rightful position. The committee’s focus is to monitor government decisions and accelerate implementation when necessary.

Strategies to double Golan Heights population

The meeting centered on a plan to double the Golan’s population by 2025 through investments in housing and infrastructure. Amid security challenges, local authorities prioritize retaining existing residents to prevent population decline.

As towns on Israel’s eastern border hold national strategic importance, the committee commits to ensuring their development and sustainability in the face of external threats.
