Hong Kong court denies student leader’s early release for praising attack on police

A Hong Kong court has denied a request for early release from prison by university student leader Kinson Cheung King-sang, who was convicted of supporting a 2021 knife attack on a police officer. The request was opposed by prison authorities and a government national security committee, citing lack of reflection and remorse.

Commissioner of Correctional Services stated that Cheung should not receive remission as he had not demonstrated genuine remorse. Cheung, former student union council chairman at the University of Hong Kong, had applied for early release on September 21.

The committee led by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu also deemed Cheung’s release as a threat to national security, reinforcing the decision to deny his application for early release.
