Greenpeace is calling on the Greek government to fulfill its promises made at the Our Ocean Conference in April. Athens has yet to ratify the UN Oceans Treaty and establish new marine protected areas.

Only eight countries have ratified the treaty since its signing a year ago. Without 60 ratifications, the treaty cannot be enforced. Scientists stress the need to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.

Greenpeace has urged Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to speed up the creation of marine protected areas. Plans for two marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean Seas are currently under review by the Environment Ministry.
