France to trial electric vehicle charging freeway in 2025.

Imagine being able to recharge your electric vehicle’s battery while driving on the highway. This futuristic concept, known as the “electric highway,” is set to be tested in 2025 on a 2-kilometer stretch of the A10 autoroute near Paris. The technology involves inductive coils installed beneath the asphalt, allowing for wireless charging as vehicles pass over them.

Selected as part of a project by the French state-owned bank Bpifrance, Vinci Autoroutes, Gustave-Eiffel University, and Hutchinson will assess the energy efficiency of this system. The aim is to reduce the need for frequent stops to charge, potentially cutting battery size by half or more. This innovative approach could revolutionize how we power electric vehicles and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

With roads handling the majority of passenger and freight transportation, decarbonizing them is crucial. By integrating wireless charging technology, vehicles can stay powered up on the go, benefiting both road users and the environment. As advancements continue, the future of electric mobility looks promising.
