In a shocking revelation, the Ernst & Young (EY) office in Pune has been operating without a state permit regulating work hours since 2007. This comes to light after the tragic death of audit executive Anna Sebastian Perayil, who reportedly succumbed to a high workload. EY is now under scrutiny in India, with federal government investigation already underway.
The incident has sparked a discussion about the need to prioritize employees’ physical and mental health in high-pressure jobs. Maharashtra’s additional labour commissioner found that the EY office in Pune was not registered under the state’s Shops and Establishments Act, which limits working hours for adults.
EY has been given seven days to explain this lapse, as non-compliance could lead to serious consequences. Despite the company’s assurance of prioritizing employee well-being, Perayil’s mother alleged her daughter faced overwhelming workload leading to her untimely demise from cardiac arrest.
EY’s practices are being questioned, with details sought about employee hours and welfare policies. The company, which employs around 100,000 people in India, must now address concerns surrounding work culture and employee well-being.
