Canadian man, Michael Kovrig, who was detained by China for over 1,000 days revealed in a recent interview the psychological torture he endured, including solitary confinement and relentless interrogations.
Kovrig, along with fellow Canadian Michael Spavor, was detained in 2018 following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou. He missed important moments like his daughter’s birth, finally meeting her after two-and-a-half years.
In his first substantial comments since their release in 2021, Kovrig described his solitary confinement, surpassing U.N. guidelines, as psychological torture. He highlighted the lack of daylight, constant interrogation, and minimal food, calling it grueling and painful.
Despite Chinese claims of handling the cases lawfully, Kovrig’s account sheds light on the harsh conditions they faced.
This interview comes amidst strained bilateral relations, with recent trade disputes and tensions. Kovrig’s emotional reunion with his daughter after enduring such hardships emphasizes the lasting impact of his ordeal.
