US-UAE Enhance Military Cooperation Amidst Escalating Tensions in the Middle East
President Joe Biden has officially recognized the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a “major defence partner”, marking a significant deepening of military ties despite ongoing friction over conflicts in Sudan and as tensions in the Middle East rise.
The recent announcement follows a White House meeting between President Biden and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The UAE now becomes only the second country to receive this particular designation, with India being the first in 2021.
The White House stated that this designation aims to enhance defense cooperation and security in the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean regions, enabling joint training, exercises, and collaboration among the military forces of the US, UAE, and India.
Although conflicts in Sudan and Gaza continue to complicate relations, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working towards ending the conflicts and allowing UN humanitarian aid into Gaza. The US and the UAE also discussed stabilization and recovery plans in Gaza, emphasizing their support for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
Conflict in Sudan
Despite tensions surrounding the UAE’s alleged involvement in the conflict in Sudan, the leaders stressed that a military solution is not viable. They underscored the importance of compliance with international humanitarian law by all parties involved in the conflict.
Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed concerns about the conflict in Sudan during a separate meeting with the UAE president, highlighting the atrocities committed against civilians in the region.
