Biden calls for calm amid Israel’s strikes on Lebanon | UN News

President Joe Biden addressed the United Nations General Assembly, expressing his desire to avoid a full-scale war in Lebanon following Israeli airstrikes that claimed hundreds of lives. Emphasizing the need for a diplomatic solution between Israel and Hezbollah, Biden faced criticism for his unwavering support of Israel despite escalating conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

As casualties rose in Lebanon and Gaza, Biden reiterated his call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas while receiving backlash for failing to pressure Israel to de-escalate. Amidst the turmoil in the Middle East, Biden also reaffirmed his administration’s support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, vowing to continue aid until a just and durable peace is achieved.

Support for Ukraine

Biden highlighted ongoing US assistance to Ukraine and condemned former President Trump’s plans to scale back support if elected. Amidst calls for increased aid to Ukraine, Biden and Vice President Harris are set to meet with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to discuss measures to counter Russian aggression.
