Army Chief Supports Interim Government for Reforms in Bangladesh
In a bold move, Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, pledged full support for the country’s interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The goal is to complete key reforms and pave the way for free and fair elections within the next 18 months. This comes after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the midst of widespread protests.
Zaman expressed his commitment to stand by Yunus to help accomplish the mission of reforming the judiciary, police, and financial institutions. The interim administration, backed by the military, aims to stabilize the country after a period of turmoil that resulted in over 1,000 deaths during violent clashes.
As the army takes on law enforcement duties, Zaman emphasized the importance of a transition to democracy with patience and balance of power. The military is also investigating allegations of misconduct and aims to maintain professionalism without political interference.
Looking ahead, Zaman envisions a separation of the armed forces from political influence through constitutional reforms under the interim government.
