Bangladesh army chief pledges unwavering support for interim government

Bangladesh army chief, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, has pledged unwavering support for the country’s interim government as it works towards key reforms following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This support is vital in ensuring that elections can be held within the next 18 months.

Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman and his troops chose to remain neutral during the student-led protests against Hasina, ultimately leading to her resignation and departure to India after a 15-year tenure. In a rare media interview at his office in Dhaka, Zaman expressed his full backing for the interim administration headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Zaman also emphasized the need to eliminate political influence within the military, outlining a clear pathway for this reform. His commitment to supporting the interim government highlights the army’s dedication to facilitating a smooth transition and upholding stability in the nation.
