Ally PMK urges BJP to conduct caste census for ‘social justice’ in India

In a recent development, PMK, an ally of the BJP, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conduct a caste census along with the population enumeration in 2021 to promote social justice in India. S Ramadoss, the founder of PMK, emphasized the importance of gathering caste-wise demographic data to benefit the country and its people.

Despite the push from PMK, the Tamil Nadu government has deferred the responsibility to the Union Government, citing a lack of authority to carry out a caste-based census. PMK has been advocating for increased quotas for Vanniyars, but faced setbacks when a legislation providing 10.5% horizontal reservation was struck down by the Supreme Court.

Ramadoss highlighted the need for affirmative action to uplift marginalized communities and address social inequality in India. He stressed the significance of caste-wise population statistics to defend reservation policies in the face of legal challenges. As the country progresses, ensuring social justice remains a key objective for the government.

Overall, the call for a caste census serves as a critical step towards achieving equitable representation and combating deep-rooted disparities in Indian society.
