In just a few months, archaeologists have discovered almost as many geoglyphs as were found in the entire last century. The new figures, identified with the AI system, have shed light on their creators’ possible reasons for forming these intricate designs over 2,000 years ago.
The unique conditions of the Nazca desert, with its dry climate and distinct topography, have preserved these geoglyphs for centuries. The discovery of 303 new geoglyphs using AI technology has added to the already known 683 relief-type geoglyphs in the region. These findings have led researchers to identify patterns and differences in the designs, revealing insights into ancient practices like human sacrifice.
The AI system, developed by IBM, identified over 1,300 potential geoglyphs from high-resolution satellite images, significantly accelerating the discovery process.
